Google background image removal placates angry users

Google has started a new program where users can add a background to their search page as well as their iGoogle. The background of the search page this morning was made semi-permanent. This move has left many users asking how to remove the Google background. The answer, nevertheless, is not as simple as numerous think it should be. There are alternatives that nevertheless allow you to use Google without the background image, though.

This morning, the Google blog officially announced the Google background image option. Google claims that the background image will not slow load times at all. This image was put on the Google homepage for a short amount of time, to highlight the new feature.

Removing the Google background image

Removing the background image on Google was the biggest question of the moment on the Google forums. The Google instructions on removal didn’t give the desired effect to most people. The instructions said that clicking the “remove background image” link would remove the image. By clicking that button, though, you are only removing the custom-set option that you’d chosen. Otherwise, the link within the bottom left-hand corner will say “change background image.” Until Google flipped the switch, there was no way to remove the default background image.

Work around the Google background image

The Google background image could possibly be removed from the homepage only by Google. There are multiple workarounds to the Google background image, though. There are two alternate Google homepages you can use that do not have the Google background image: http://www.google.com/firefox and also the Google SSL Beta search page. Either way, the majority of Google searches occur each day not from the Google homepage, but from toolbars and built-in search on other sites – a huge amount of traffic which helps contribute to the $ 484 stock price.
